Belarusian opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya held an online meeting with the ambassadors of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, Canada. The participants discussed the preparations for would-be talks on a peaceful resolution of the crisis in Belarus.

During the meeting with the representatives of the Nordic countries, Tsikhanouskaya stressed the need to step up pressure on the Lukashenka regime so that there would be more opportunities to involve Belarusian officials in negotiations and put an end to lawlessness and violence in the country. The issues of strengthening targeted restrictions and adopting the fourth package of EU sanctions were also raised in the course of the event.

As Norway and Estonia are currently non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed their ambassadors, asking the two countries to initiate the council’s hearings on the present-day escalation of violence and the feasibility of a non-hostile settlement of the situation in Belarus.

The politician also thanked Sweden for its proposal to use the OSCE as the main venue for staging the negotiations and proposed to develop a corresponding roadmap.

As reported earlier, the US and EU missions to the OSCE showed their support for the nationwide online voting on holding a dialogue between the Lukashenka regime and its numerous critics. The initiative was announced by Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s office on March, 18.

‘The voting is being launched in order to start talks with ‘the representatives of the regime who are ready to think about the future and make deliberate decisions rather than turn the crisis into a complete catastrophe,’ the politician said.

She called Belarusians for registering in the voting system Holas (Vote) which enjoys the confidence of the EU, the US, the OSCE, other countries and international organisations. The would-be negotiations are to take place with the participation of high-profile international mediators, Tsikhanouskaya’s team promised.
